Song Meaning (Vanilla Twilight)

"Vanilla Twilight"

The stars lean down to kiss you
And I lie awake and miss you
Pour me a heavy dose of atmosphere
'Cause I'll doze off safe and soundly
But I'll miss your arms around me
I'd send a postcard to you, dear
'Cause I wish you were here

I'll watch the night turn light blue
But it's not the same without you
Because it takes two to whisper quietly
The silence isn't so bad
'Till I look at my hands and feel sad
'Cause the spaces between my fingers
Are right where yours fit perfectly

I'll find repose in new ways
Though I haven't slept in two days
'Cause cold nostalgia chills me to the bone
But drenched in vanilla twilight
I'll sit on the front porch all night
Waist deep in thought because when
I think of you I don't feel so alone

I don't feel so alone
I don't feel so alone

As many times as I blink
I'll think of you tonight
(Tonight, tonight, tonight...)

I'll think of you tonight

When violet eyes get brighter
And heavy wings grow lighter
I'll taste the sky and feel alive again
And I'll forget the world that I knew
But I swear I won't forget you
Oh if my voice could reach back through the past
I'd whisper in your ear:
"Oh darling, I wish you were here"

Lyrics Meaninng:

The stars lean down to kiss you, (the GF or wife has passed away; could also mean they broke up and he wishes her the best life. I think it means he has passed away and he can't physically kiss her, so the stars represent him)

And I lie awake and miss you. (he is still alive and yearns for her or he is no longer in this world, but spiritually near here)

Pour me a heavy dose of atmosphere, (could be a literal meaning and/or means he wants to be intoxicated or he's ascended to the clouds)

Because I’ll doze off safe and soundly (after this act, he will forget about his present state of mind)

But I’ll miss your arms around me (but no matter how much desensitized he becomes, he can't escape the physical reality of yearning and missing her caress and embrace, “arms around me”)

I’d send a postcard to your dear (it would be easy to send a postcard)

Because I wish you were here (and the irony is that he can’t because she has passed away or they have broken up and lost contact or he isn't in this world because he's dead, but why would he wish she was dead too, am confused)

I'll watch the night turn light blue (this suggest she has not passed away, he is up waiting for her return as night turns to daylight; or he is beyond the point of reason and doesn’t sleep because he is so deeply saddened and in deep remorse. This is gives him “repose” for peace and tranquility by being where they were before and repeating the same activity) (this also means he is sitting next to her, she can't see him, but he's there)

But it’s not the same without you, (this suggest they have stayed up before together from dawn to sunrise or sunset to dusk or some kind of activity) (they can't physically be touching)

Because it takes two to whisper quietly (this doesn’t mean quietness in any way, but they were so involved in each other that nothing mattered external them because they were in their own quiet world) (again, can't touch)

The silence isn’t so bad, till I look at my hands and feel sad (this culminates to point no matter how much he tries to forget, he can’t escape reality) (separation of two different dimensions or world)

Because the spaces between my fingers are right where yours fit perfectly (yearning and reminiscing again for her touch and he’s dying from the pain and agony inside)

I’ll find repose in new ways, though I haven’t slept in two days, (this backs “I'll watch the night turn light blue” and he hasn’t slept in two days by watching the turning of the sky between the soft light just after sunset or just before sunrise, twilight. And that he will find some other way to reminisce about her)

Because cold nostalgia chills me to the bone (nostalgia shouldn’t be cold. Sth must have violently happened between them or to her/him)

But drenched in vanilla twilight, I'll sit on the front porch all night (going back to “I'll watch the night turn light blue” [twilight]. Sitting on the front porch has connotation for waiting, looking or reflecting) (twilight is when barely visible light appears after sunset or before sunrise. this suggest he descended from the sky and is sitting next to her, but she can't see him but he can see her. So she is also looking at the night turn light blue)

Waist-deep in thought because when I think of you (reflecting and reminiscing about her)

I don't feel so alone (having her in his memory keeps his sanity together)

As many times as I blink, I’ll think of you tonight, I’ll think of you tonight. (he is wanting to die as there may not be a tomorrow or he is only on earth for one or two nights and needs to go back)

When violet eyes get brighter (He is dead and in heaven or having a different mental conscious state of mind)

And heavy wings grow lighter (he becomes an angel but doesn't want to leave her as he is emotionally burdened, but eventually his pain is slowly lifted or his heavy burden he once had has been lifted)

I’ll taste the sky and feel alive again (means he is an angel ascending to the heaven to meet her, but never does or he has found someone new and his live is now renewed or he ascends to the sky again and is reborn)

And I’ll forget the world that I knew (means he is going to the heaven, or he is the one who has passed away and she hasn’t or he is with someone new and slowly forgetting his past) (reborn)

But I swear I won’t forget you (no matter what, she will always have a place in his heart)

Oh if my voice could reach back through the past
I'll whisper in your ear
Oh darling I wish you were here (these last three verses mean he is already in heaven and she is still alive, or he is still yearning for the impossible in the present sense, “reach back through the past”) (or, he wishes he was still in the past because he has passed away)

Vanilla Twilight - my interpretation is he came from heaven to visit her one last time
